Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Partnership Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
