A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
