Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using these medications must be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become starving," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
